Our guide to updating and styling your dining furniture and decor

The dining room is often overlooked as a room, especially when a lot of us live in open-plan spaces. The dining area ends up being part of the kitchen and living area. If you happen to have a separate dining room, it can be a challenge to choose a style. Certainly, if it's not a room that is used as much as others in the home. Whether you have a dining room, a table in a kitchen or an open plan living space we have some dining room decor ideas and inspiration for you to help update your home.

 

Table

When updating our dining room furniture we will most likely want to keep hold of the table and change up everything around it. But do consider what you are using your table for when you are not eating at it. Often the dining table will inevitably become a dumping ground for paperwork, books and anything else you can't find a home for at any given time. Our tip to avoid this is to have the table set at all times. Use placemats, chargers, a focal point in the middle, or a selection of vases & candlesticks. These will act as a deterrent for the pesky paperwork, but also a great style spot.

 

Colour

When it comes to colour and dining rooms, we think everybody should be making a statement. Whether through paint or wallpapers, the dining room is a room not to be forgotten. Don't go head deep into covering your dining room walls with something you may later regret. Spend some time getting inspiration and ideas of what you like. Mirrors

Mirrors are a really great way to make your space feel larger. This works really well in a dining room when the mirror is positioned facing the dining table. The bigger the better in our opinion, and for something a little bit different try a convex mirror like our Large Round Antiqued Foxed Mirror. This style will create an alternative reflection, but still bounces the light and give the impression of space. Mirrors are particularly useful in smaller rooms, however, we think everyone should have a mirror as part of their dining room decor.

 

Dresser

Storage is massively important for all us, but it doesn't have to be boring. A statement dresser can be a focal point for you and your guests, as well as giving the perfect surface to dress with ornaments, vases and pictures. Maybe you want to choose a dresser or sideboard that is glass-fronted, to show off your glassware. A large mirror or piece of art above this will finish off the look. Drinks Cabinet

Every dining room should have a drinks cabinet or trolley in it. We love a cocktail corner, and it makes perfect sense for this to be in the dining room. Whether you like to show off your glassware or hide it away, there is a cabinet out there for you. Embrace a bit of glamour and indulgence by having a cocktail or two at the ready for your guests when hosting. When not in use, these pieces of dining furniture will look the part on any day, drawing the eye through the room.

 

Lighting

This is one of the most important aspects to think about in any room and least not, the dining room. You will need to consider different times of the day, plus different occasions you will be using the space for. Every dining table needs an overhead chandelier or ceiling light. This will define the dining area and anchor the table to the room, creating an inviting place to eat.

Table lamps are great dotted around the room, maybe on a small side table, on top of a dresser or on a cabinet. Having these small pockets of lights will create an atmosphere and also light up your favourite parts of the room. Gallery Wall

When updating your dining room decor think about what you want to do with your walls. We love a gallery wall, perfect for creating your own art installation. Before you start putting any pictures up, make sure all your images are in the correct frames. You may want them all to be the same colour, or go for a more eclectic look with different finishes. Once you have all your prints ready lay them out on the floor in the formation you want.

RSG Top Tip: make sure you measure your wall first. You don't want to do it by eye and then find your pictures don't fit.

Take a picture od the layout and then you can start putting them up. For an easy and quick way to hang pictures, we use command strips or similar sticky hooks. Over time if you want to change them around, it will make it so much easier.
