How To Use Rugs In Your Outdoor Space - Top Tips With Dee Campling

Last week we packed up our favourite selection of floor rugs and headed off to Gloucestershire to the home of the fabulous Dee Campling.

An interior designer and stylist, Dee's creative eye and distinctive bohemian style is like no other and one thing is for certain, she is the Queen of creating an amazing outdoor space. We could spend hours lusting after Dee's beautiful outdoor space on Instagram and after visiting her home last year for an outdoor shoot we couldn't wait to visit Dee again.

Our focus last year was to create a Rockett St George garden takeover at Dee's house (you can see the garden takeover here). So this year we wanted to do something different. So many of you contacted us, asking how to bring the inside outdoors and inject personality into your garden and so our purpose for our latest collaboration was to show you how to bring the indoors outside and create a flow between your home interiors and your garden space. Our focus is primarily on using rugs outside, but Dee has also given us her top tips for creating a beautiful outdoor space.

Dee Campling's Top Tips On How To Use Rugs In Outdoor Space

No.1. Be brave! Dee's top tip for creating an outdoor space is to let your hair down and don't be restricted by your creative choices. Just because your rugs are intended for the indoors doesn't mean that they can't be used outside. So throw caution to the wind and take your favourite rugs outside. Just bring them in at the end of the day... it only takes 10 minutes and the impact that you will create in your outdoor space is hard to beat. Experiment with our Pune Mustard & Gold Cotton Dhurrie Rug, Jaipur Green & Coral Cotton Dhurrie Rug and Indore Slate Cotton Rug for maximum dramatic effect!

No.2. Use Jute Rugs to form a base. Jute rugs have the added benefit of being lightweight and easy to roll up and store away at the end of the day. They are great because you can shake them out or wash them with relative easy not forgetting the splash of colour, texture and cosiness they will create in your outdoor area. Particularly great choices would include the Natural Jute Rug With Black Tassels, the Black Mandala Pattern Natural Jute Circular Rug and the Natural Jute Printed Rug - Ruby Red.

No.3.Layer me up. Use sheepskins or other cosy rugs as layers. Sheepskins are a firm favourite of Dee's and she loves to drape sheepskins over her sofas, on the back of her dining chairs and over rugs on the floor. But you don't just have to stop at sheepskins layer rugs such as our Bengal Black & Natural Cotton Rug over the side of your sofa, over your rugs or even as a cosy throw or alternative table runner. There's really no limit to how creative you can be.

No.4. Use rugs as decoration. Hang a rug on the wall as an alternative wall decoration. It will add texture and a splash of colour to your indoor space. Thinner rugs such as cotton or jute rugs are best for this as they are not as heavy to hang like a deep pile rug would be. Our Natural Jute Printed Rug - Ruby Red, Indore Slate Cotton Rug and Casablanca Natural Moroccan-Style Cotton Rug would all make great choices.

No.5. Add a splash of colour to your outdoor room with beautiful coloured rugs. It creates such a beautiful contrast in your outdoor space. Our Jaipur Green & Coral Cotton Dhurrie Rug, Pune Mustard & Gold Cotton Dhurrie Rug or Natural Jute Printed Rug - Emerald Green would make great choices for this.

No.1. Lighting. Use fairy lights, festoon lights and lighting sets with a vintage cable and then you can put any lampshade on it. You can hang the light on a tree and then bring it indoors at the end of the day.

No.2. Chairs. Try and use chairs that you would use for indoors and outside. Vintage style metal chairs or beautiful natural rattan chairs are great for both indoors and outside. Typically lightweight and easy to transport to and from your house, bring these chairs out during the warmer months and create a beautiful alfresco dining setting. Our Modern Woven Rattan Dining Chair - Natural, Midas Chair or Andilana Wicker Garden Dining Chair would all make particularly great choices.

No.3. Sofas. Dee's sofa is a junk shop find that she spray painted silver. However, there are now more and more outdoor benches or sofas that would look great in your garden. Check out our Beautiful Black Bamboo Bench Chair, layered with cushions as an outdoor sofa alternative. Another idea would be to create a pallet sofa with wooden pallets. Check out our blog - 10 Easy Things To Make With Pallets for tips on how to make a pallet sofa.

No.4. Rugs. Create a welcoming feeling in your outdoor space with lots of rugs. Layer rugs on sofas, floors and hang the rugs on the wall for a beautifully inviting bohemian space.

No.5. Plants. Lots of beautiful potted plants dotted around the space will enhance the feeling of connection to nature. Ness from the @thewildgirls_cots created an incredible hanging floral chandelier and floral disco ball especially for the shoot to dramatic effect. Stick primarily to natural plants, but a few faux plants dotted here and then can help create that leafy effect whilst being incredibly low maintenance.
