THIS is the colour we'll all be loving in 2025...
To celebrate the turning of the year, and welcome in a new colour scheme, we've created an edit below inspired by the new shade. Introducing Mocha Mousse, the Pantone Colour Of The Year for 2025.
With a new year fast approaching, it's that time in the calendar when those clever people at the Pantone Colour Institute predict the hue that's going to be featuring heavily in our homes over the next 12 months.
The colour experts at the Institute forecast global colour trends and advise the biggest names in fashion and interiors on how to use colour in their brand identity and product ranges.
So when they unveil their trendsetting shades, the design world takes notice. The Pantone Colour Institute's prediction for 2025 is a luxuriant, rich brown called Mocha Mousse, and it'll be taking a turn in the spotlight for all the right reasons.
Continuing the underlying theme of nurturing and warmth from last year's colour, Peach Fuzz, Mocha Mousse is a rich hue that speaks to everyday pleasures, from a sumptuous bar of chocolate to a luxuriously silky hot cocoa or cup of coffee.
Described as both sophisticated and unpretentious, this shade represents a balance between elegance and approachability, aligning with contemporary desires for grounding, luxurious, and natural aesthetics.
Rooted in the psychology of colour, rich brown tones evoke feelings of stability, comfort, and help us feel connected to nature, especially when we use natural materials in our products, as with these rattan pieces.
A Hug For The Home
Rich, earthy colour palettes have been a constant in the design world for some time, with new neutrals transforming the reputation of beige, on-trend terracotta tones that capture wanderlust desires and grown-up dusky pinks that work with everything.
However, brown is often left out of the spotlight. Mocha Mousse is about to change all that!
Choosing a beautifully soft hue with warm rose undertones, this distinctive shade of brown takes inspiration from comfort rituals to create a comforting hug for the home.
Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, highlights how this colour transforms brown from a 'humble and grounded' tone to one that's aspirational and refined.
Just look at how wonderfully it works on this quilt and ruffle-edged cushion. The floral detailing is beautifully intricate while the warmth of the brown lends this a fabulously cosy aesthetic.
Wonderfully Warm
Whether used on statement furniture designed to be a forever piece, soft furnishings like cushions and throws, or as an accent of colour, Mocha Mousse adds an inviting and timeless elegance to your home that's as warm as it is sophisticated.
We like to build out from the central colour to include degrees of light and dark, creating a tonal kaleidoscope based on the shade in question.
This enables you to mix, match, blend and infuse, but also to use the hero shade as the standalone hue.
Here are five reasons we love Mocha Mousse:
It's a versatile neutral. Brown is a neutral colour that pairs well with a wide range of shades, from bold accents like green or gold to softer tones like cream or beige. This makes it adaptable for various interior styles, from minimalist to rustic.
It conveys warmth and cosiness. Brown evokes a sense of comfort and stability. Its earthy qualities can make spaces feel safe and relaxing, which is especially welcome in areas like the living room and in the bedroom.
-
It brings the outdoors in. As a colour commonly found in wood and other natural materials, brown brings the outdoors inside. This connection to nature can help create a calming environment that promotes wellbeing.
It's timeless and sophisticated. Rich brown tones, like Pantone’s Mocha Mousse, can add a touch of elegance and sophistication while remaining understated. They are classic and unlikely to go out of style, making them a good investment for long-term decor.
It grounds us. Brown’s earthy undertones help anchor a space, making it feel balanced. This grounding quality is particularly useful in homes with open layouts or bold design elements.
The Sensational '70s
...because we can't feature brown without referring to the decade in which it was EVERYWHERE!
Taking a heritage shade and giving it a modern twist with a contemporary pattern is the perfect way to bring it up to date, and you can see here with the pieces below how effectively this works.
Tactility and movement are key here, and this highly visual detailing does the job brilliantly.
The Devil's In The Detail
When co-ordinating a colour scheme, attention to detail makes all the difference.
Ensuring your ornaments and trinkets are from the same colour palette, and complementary rather than clashing, means you can use shades of your central colour to great effect, creating layers of colour that wash through your home.
Mixing materials helps with this, too, as you can see from our use of glass and ceramics - it gives the pieces a very different look while still retaining a 'family' feel.
