Are we witnessing the end, or the beginning, of a meal? It’s not clear whether there’s more wine to be poured or food to be served from this piece of art, which helps it become what all good artwork should be – a talking point that suggests myriad developments, none of which we can ever be sure of.
The glorious bold colours swirl and dance before us, while the artist’s clever rendering of texture gives the neutral background of the tablecloth a fabulously tactile quality. Artist Julie Sommer (who goes by the name of Misfitting Things) is a digital artist who creates her work using computer techniques, which can be programmed to recreate watercolour or oil painting effects, for example, without ever having to pick up an actual brush. It’s an emerging art form that produces stunning results, as this piece shows. Equally as beautiful against a darker colour scheme or more neutral Scandi tones, hang this where it has lots of space to breathe.
