How To Measure A Rug For A Room

When starting out with choosing a rug a few simple things need to be considered. Continue reading and follow our guide on how to measure a rug for a room.

Firstly, choose the room you are looking to put a rug in and decide where you want to place it. Does it sit underneath all furniture in the room, or is it just going to sit in the middle under a coffee table? Perhaps the rug itself sits on its own, this would be common in a hallway or kitchen. It all comes down to how you want your rug to function in the room. Is it to separate a space, define a space or unite a space?

HOW TO MEASURE A RUG FOR THE LIVING ROOM

In the living room, you have a few options to consider depending on the layout of the room. Having the rug take up a large section with all the chairs and tables on top of it will anchor the space and create an obvious seating area. This works particularly well for larger rooms where the seating is positioned away from walls.

In smaller rooms where the seating is up against the wall a good-sized rug to sit in the void between the furniture will help with scale and make the room appear larger.

You can always opt for something in between, where the front legs of the furniture sit on the rug. This is a good option if one or more pieces of furniture are against a wall.

 

HOW TO MEASURE A RUG FOR THE BEDROOM

When it comes to bedrooms, rugs work particularly well at framing the bed with a section of rug running around the edge. This could be with the bed completely covering the rug or half on and half off. Alternatively, you could go for a runner on either side of the bed. This will create symmetry and define the space where your bedside table sits.

RUGS FOR THE HALLWAY

Here you have a couple of options with how you can place rugs. A runner is the best choice for a narrow space with it sitting central, or to one side with furniture opposite. Layering rugs can create a point of interest in an entranceway, so this is worth considering.

Once this has been decided on you then need to look at measuring the room ready for the rug. Measure the floor where you want the rug to go and then start your search for the perfect rug.

Tip. You could attach large pieces of paper together to get an idea of how the rug will look, or use painters’ tape to mark the outline on the floor. These will help with scale and proportion

KEEP IT IN PROPORTION – As mentioned above it's key to get the size and proportion right. Too big and it can swamp the room and too small it will look really insignificant

BE CAREFUL OF COLOURS – consider colour as much as pattern. A patterned rug will draw the eye and help ground space, but if you want something a little more understated, still go for a pattern but keep it simple with one or two colours, just like our Revive Rug

WEAR AND TEAR – when choosing a rug, you must consider how it will wear. A hallway or kitchen may get more use than a living room or bedroom.
